Chapter 20: Nate's Choice
The Eastern coach shook Nate's hand and kept it.
"That was a record swim," he said. "I watched it twice on my phone before I drove down."
"Thank you, sir."
"I don't say that often. Walk with me."
"I'd like Jesse to hear this."
The coach glanced at Jesse, and then at the hands still joined between them.
"Fine," he said. "He's the reason I'm here, I suppose."
They went to the end of the deck, where the dive well cast a blue shadow.
The noise of the crowd was far away.
Cal stayed twenty feet back with his arms crossed, pretending not to listen.
The Halbrook coach came over and stood at Nate's other shoulder without being asked.
"I'll say it straight," the Eastern coach said.
"The spot is yours until tonight.
"It comes with a full scholarship, our lane, our trainer, our relay squad, and the best pool in the state."
"I know what you're offering."
"Then say yes."
"No," Nate said.
The coach did not blink.
"Say that again."
