Chapter 6: The Pool on Pierce Street
"Evening, Dawn," Ed said.
He walked up my steps past her with his keys in his hand and a blanket over his shoulder.
Walter's tail swung at her bunny slippers.
"Morning, Ed," said Dawn.
"It's two."
"It's a Thursday, technically. I'm just being accurate."
He went inside without another word, and the screen door shut behind him very softly.
Dawn waited three full seconds.
Then she turned to me with her whole face lit up.
"Sit," she said. "Eat pie."
I sat.
She handed me a fork.
It was a Dutch apple pie from the Hy-Vee, still in the plastic dome, and she had already eaten the entire left side.
"You have leaves in your hair," she said.
"It's the lake."
"You have a mark on your neck the size of a plum."
"It's the lake."
"You're glowing like a microwave, Lori. I can read by you."
I put a forkful of pie in my mouth so I wouldn't have to answer.
Dawn Nye is thirty-one, a dental hygienist, and the only person on this earth I have ever told the truth to on the first try.
She has lived next door since third grade.
Her bedroom window is twelve feet from mine.
"Okay," she said. "Four days."
"Don't."
"The man promised your father. Your father, who sat on this exact porch and cried at your mother's funeral, got a promise out of Ed. And it took him four days." She counted on her fingers. "There was a pool. I owe twenty dollars to the lady across the street."
"You bet on me?"
"I bet on Ed. I said he'd last a week. She said Tuesday." Dawn took a bite. "I want to be clear that I'm happy for you. I also want to be clear that I know."
"Know what?"
She set the fork down.
