Chapter 9: The Spare Bed
He fished his phone out of the dishwater and buried it in a bag of rice.
Then he carried me down the hall to the spare room without a single word about it.
I was still wearing a dish towel and nothing else.
He set me down on the bed I'd bought in April.
It took my weight, and he stood at the foot and looked at me.
The lamp from my mother's sewing table threw a small gold circle on the wall.
Walter walked in, turned around three times and lay down on the rug with a groan.
"We have the whole night," Ed said.
"We have until Sunday dinner."
"I'll take it."
He undressed slowly.
I propped myself on the pillows and watched every button, the heavy shoulders coming out of the shirt, the zip, the long scarred legs.
When he came onto the bed I opened my arms.
The first time was for me.
He kissed me for what felt like an hour, lying half over me, one big hand spread on my ribs.
The kisses went on without hurry and without a goal.
He kissed my mouth, my jaw, the freckle on my shoulder he'd decided was his favorite.
He kissed his way down my breastbone and took his time with each breast, tongue slow and wet.
I slid my fingers into his hair and sighed.
"Turn over," he said. "On your side."
I turned, facing the wall.
He fitted himself behind me, chest to my back, knees tucked behind my knees, and one arm slid under my neck.
His cock lay hot and hard against the small of my back.
His other hand drifted down.
"Stay just like this," he said into my hair.
"I'm not going any..." I lost the sentence when his fingers slid through me.
He touched me in the lightest, laziest circles, so slowly.
I rocked back against him without meaning to.
"You're beautiful like this," he said. "In the lamp."
"Stop talking."
"No."
"Then say something useful."
"I'm going to take my time with you," he said. "And you're going to tell me when you can't stand it."
His fingers slipped inside me, one and then two, curling slow and sure.
His thumb found my clit and just stayed there, a patient weight.
"Ed."
"Not yet. You're not allowed yet."
"That's cruel."
"That's careful."
I could stand it for four minutes.
By then I was panting, my hips rolling into his hand, my nails digging into the arm beneath my head.
"Now," I said. "Please. Ed, now."
He lifted my top leg, hooked it back over his thigh and opened me wide, and I felt him find the place and press.
He slid in from behind, inch by inch.
It was the slowest, deepest thing.
My mouth fell open.
His arm tightened across my chest and held me tight against him, skin on skin from my shoulders to my heels.
We lay joined like two spoons in a drawer.
He moved in long, easy rolls of his hips.
