Chapter 15: I Wasn't Cold

I told him to drive to his house, and I followed him in my own car.

I did not trust myself in his truck.

He parked in the shell drive under the cypress, and I parked behind him, and neither of us said a word on the steps.

It was nine in the morning, and I had called in sick from the causeway shoulder.

He opened his front door and stood back for me.

I went through into the kitchen where I had told him about the funeral, and set my bag on the table with the opinions.

Then I turned around.

"I'm not forgiving you," I said.

"I know."

"Don't say you know. Don't say anything I haven't told you to say."

His mouth closed.

He stood in his own kitchen with the sun coming through the window onto his grey beard and his folded hands.

He looked like a man waiting to be sentenced.

"I'm so angry I can't see," I said. "I'm so sad I can't stand up. And I want you."

His eyes shut for a second.

"I want you so badly it makes me sick," I said. "I want to find out something, and you're going to help me, and you're going to do exactly what I say."

"Yes."

"Yes, what?"

His throat moved.

"Yes, Monalisa."

"Take your shirt off."

He did it.

He pulled it over his head and dropped it on the floor, and the gold ring on its chain swung against his chest.

I walked up and took the ring in my fingers.
