Chapter 18: After the Wind
The storm took the ice house roof, the east wall, the net shed door, and forty feet of the dock.
It left the Odette D. exactly where she'd been, straining on her doubled lines, with a dent in her bow and a pelican asleep on the wheelhouse roof.
Lucius stood on the broken planks at first light with his hands on his hips and looked at it for a long time.
"Well," he said. "She held."
"So did we."
"So did the cinderblock."
I leaned my head on his arm.
It was daylight, with the whole dock looking on, and I didn't care.
The hands began to arrive at seven, one truck at a time, walking down the ruined planks in their boots with coffee and chain saws.
They looked at the roof.
They looked at us, standing together at the end of the dock with my head on his sleeve.
The oldest of them took off his cap, and put it back on, and went to find a hammer.
Nobody said a word.
By ten, Odette had driven back from Houston, parked on the shoulder because the lot was under a foot of water, and waded in her rain boots to the ice house door.
