Chapter 22: Like This

At midnight the last truck pulled out of the lot, and the dock was ours.

The string lights still burned along the pilings.

Odette had gone home with a foil pan in each hand and a look on her face that said she would not be spoken to until Tuesday.

The speaker on the crate was playing something slow and old, an accordion and a fiddle and a man singing in French about a girl who lived by the water.

I stood at the end of the dock where I'd stood in August.

The Odette D. creaked on her lines behind me.

Lucius came up beside me and stopped.

He had taken off his good shirt and rolled his sleeves, and there was a smear of catfish batter on his forearm.

He held out his hand.

I looked at it.

It was a big hand, rough and scarred, with the top of the thumb missing, palm up in the string light.

"Dance with me," he said.

"You asked first this time."

"I was always going to."

I put my hand in his.

He drew me in.

We danced badly, on a broken dock, in the dark, with the water slapping the pilings beneath our feet.

His arm was solid around my waist.

My cheek found the place on his chest where it fit.

"Not like this," I said, into his shirt.

I felt him laugh.

"No," he said. "Like this."

His mouth came down on mine.
