My Daughter Is Dying, and My Husband Is Saving His Lover's Son novel · Chapter 17 of 32

Chapter 17: The Lawn

I stood in my own side yard and called 911 for the first time in my life.

"Is anyone hurt, ma'am?"

"No. My husband changed the locks on our house while our daughter was in the hospital. She's in the car. She just had a bone marrow transplant."

"Is he inside?"

"His girlfriend's things are."

The dispatcher was quiet for a second.

"An officer's on the way."

Then I called my lawyer.

"Your name's on the deed," she said. "He can't lock you out of a marital home. Not without a court order, and he hasn't got one. Put the officer on when he comes."

The officer was young and very polite and wiped his shoes on the welcome mat of a house he couldn't get into.

Then he called Brad.

Brad's Audi pulled into the driveway twenty-two minutes later.

Tasha was in the passenger seat.

Clara saw her through the car window and slid down in her booster until only the crown showed.

Brad got out first, hands up a little.

"Heidi, I was going to tell you."

"When?"

"Today. I was going to explain."

"Explain it to the officer."

Tasha got out in big sunglasses and a cream sweater, carrying an iced coffee.

"Her landlord changed the locks on her," Brad said. "She had nowhere to go. Her mother took Caden. She's lost everything."

"She hit Caden in the face in front of forty people."

"She was under unbelievable stress," he said, but he didn't look at Tasha when he said it. "Caden's been coached. Her mother's been turning him against her for a year."

The neighbors were coming out.

The retired man next door who'd run the church bake sale stood on his porch in his slippers.

A woman from three doors down walked over with her golden retriever and stopped at the end of our driveway.
