Chapter 24: The Guest List
"Can you stop it?" I asked.
"Stop a party? No." The detective was quiet a moment. "But I can go to one."
"You're going?"
"I bought a ticket this afternoon. Seventy-five dollars, standing room at the back." She sounded almost amused. "If she tells that room her son is dying and takes their money for it, I'll be standing right there."
"And if she doesn't say it?"
"She'll say it. It's on the invitation."
On Monday morning I took the invitation off the fridge and carried it downstairs to the back table.
By ten there were four people sitting around it.
The dad with the toddler, on his day off, the toddler asleep in a stroller beside him.
The grandmother from the end of the hall, in her church hat, though it was Monday.
The mother of the girl who only ate pink things, with a pink notebook.
And my phone, propped against the jar of cranes, with the mom across the hall on video from her kitchen in Lexington.
"Read it again," she said.
I read it again.
"Caden's final wish is to see his mother's work continue."
"That boy is in Westerville eating cereal," the grandmother said.
"I know."
"With hair."
"I know."
"Then I'm going," the grandmother said. "I want to see her face."
"Tables are five thousand dollars," I said.
"I have four hundred in my purse and a very good hat."
The dad with the toddler laughed so hard the toddler woke up.
"We're not buying a table," I said. "We're not putting one more dollar into her account."
"Then how do we get in?" the mother of the pink girl asked.
The bell over the door jingled.
The woman in pearls came in, in the same linen jacket, and stood at the end of the back table.
