Chapter 18: Fresh Start

"Every single one," I said out loud.

Malphas woke up under my cheek.

"What?"

I held the phone over his face so he could see the flyer.

He read it twice. His skin stayed warm under my hand, but his eyes went red at the rims.

"New leases," he said. "With new clauses. Worse ones."

"And a year free, so nobody reads them."

"Nobody can read them but you."

"Then I'll be there," I said.

He sat up.

"No."

"Mal."

"You read two in one day and nearly went down. You read one on Friday and bled through your shirt. A crowd would kill you."

"Not if I read it once. One line, out loud, to everybody holding a lease. They're all witnesses for each other."

"You don't know that."

"I read the hearth book. You know I'm right."

He didn't answer, which meant I was.

We fought about it for six days.

We fought while I sat at the Tenant Desk and Lacey called every Greaves tenant on the docket list from her break room.

Her message was always the same.

"Go to the party. Eat the free food. Bring your old lease. Don't sign a thing."

We fought while the young mother from courtroom two went door to door on the Eastside with a stack of photocopies of her dismissal.

On Friday night he stopped fighting.

He sat on the edge of my bed with his elbows on his knees.

"I can't stop you," he said.

"No."

"I wrote that you could leave any day you like. I never wrote that you'd stay safe."
