Chapter 26: The Vote
"All in favor of Greaves Tower," said the council president.
Nobody on the bench raised a hand.
Not one of the nine.
"Opposed."
Nine hands went up.
The front six rows didn't cheer at first.
They just breathed out, two hundred people at once.
Then the young mother from courtroom two let out a whoop, and the whole chamber came apart.
People stood on their chairs. The boy from 4D stood on Malphas.
Opal took off her hat and waved it over her head.
The council president banged her gavel until she gave up and laughed.
"The application is denied," she said into the noise. "Item two."
Lacey leaned over my shoulder.
"There's an item two," she said. "I may have helped it onto the agenda."
"Lacey."
"It was a public form. I'm very powerful at a public form."
"Item two," said the council president. "A request from the owner, Ms. Dorrie Kimball, to designate the Larkspur on Vine Street a city landmark."
I turned around and stared at Lacey.
She shrugged. "You signed it. In November. You sign everything I put in front of you when you're tired."
"That's a terrible thing to know about me."
"I only use it for good."
A councilman at the end of the bench leaned into his microphone.
