Chapter 30: The Pen
The dress form in Opal's sewing room had been wearing half a wedding gown since October.
I'd seen it the day she taught me to sew on his button.
"Whose wedding?" I'd asked.
"Nobody's yet," she'd said.
On the first Saturday of March, she stood me in front of it and took the pins out of her mouth.
"Nobody's yet," I said. "You said nobody's yet."
"I said yet." She pulled the gown off the form and held it up against me. "I didn't say nobody's."
It was ivory, with long sleeves and a high back, and a row of tiny covered buttons all the way down the spine.
"How many buttons?"
"Thirty."
"Opal, he's going to take an hour."
"Good," said Opal. "Make him."
Lacey was sitting on the floor with a pincushion on her wrist, because Opal had drafted her.
"Arms up," Opal said.
I put my arms up.
The gown came down over me, cool and heavy, and stopped at my hips.
It didn't close in the back.
Not by a long way.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I can skip lunch until May."
Opal looked at me over her reading glasses.
"You'll do no such thing," she said. "You'll eat. I'll sew. I've been letting out seams since I was twelve, and I've never once asked a girl to fit the dress."
"She's made fifty wedding dresses," said Lacey. "She told me."
