Chapter 19: Open C

Bai Jin walked to the back wall of the Floor with three hundred and eighty people behind him.

Nobody spoke.

He opened the control box and put his hand on the ramp switch.

It was cold.

Behind him someone whispered, and the speaker hissed the whisper quiet.

He pressed the switch.

The shutter at the top of the ramp rose with its long iron groan.

Below it, in the white light, fifty-one Stadium men were sitting on the concrete in rows.

They stood up slowly.

They looked tired, and unhurt, and a little ashamed.

"Go back to your Director if you want," said Bai Jin. "You're free. I'd like you to stay and see this first."

He turned to the crowd.

"Come down. All of you. Look at everything."

They went down the ramp in a long quiet line, and he went with them.

Warehouse C was lit from end to end.

The front three rows stood stacked to the ceiling, bright and full.

Bai Jin walked up to the first pallet and pulled a carton off it with one hand.

It came away far too light.

He turned it upside down and shook it, and a drift of old newspaper fell out on the floor.

A woman made a small sound.

He pulled down another.

And another.

He walked down the aisle opening cartons, and the floor was soon ankle-deep in newspaper, and nobody said a thing.
