Chapter 8: Two in the Morning
Gong Ting had known for eight months that Bai Jin left his bunk at two in the morning.
He had not followed him once.
A guard does not follow his employer to the toilet, and he had told himself that was probably where he went.
Tonight he followed him.
It was the word Tao Rui had said through the bars, the one Bai Jin had pretended not to hear.
Eleven weeks.
Gong Ting stood in the dark of the stairwell on the ground floor and listened to the soft steps going down.
Bai Jin took the service stairs to the second basement, where the cold chain had once run.
He took them quickly, and he did not use a light.
Gong Ting gave him the length of a flight and went after him in his socks.
Warehouse C was a long concrete hall with steel racks to the roof, and a smell of old frost and rust.
A freezer door stood open at the end, with a hand lamp on the floor in front of it.
Bai Jin stood in the lamplight with a clipboard.
He was counting the display.
Counting it did not make it true.
He wore his vest over a thin undershirt, and his shoulders were tight with cold.
"Row one," he said, to nobody. "Forty-two pallets."
Gong Ting stood behind a pillar, a hundred feet away.
