Chapter 4: The Yard

Hagedorn Marine sat at the end of a gravel road on Lake Minnetonka, behind a chain-link fence and a sign my mother had painted herself.

HAGEDORN MARINE. ENGINES. REPAIRS. HONEST PRICES.

The paint had flaked off the last word years ago.

I borrowed the gardener's pickup at six and got there by seven.

Thirty-one people in coveralls were standing in the lot with their coffee.

They went quiet when I climbed down.

Every one of them had taught me something.

"Tilly," said the foreman, a stooped man with a grey mustache who had once let me hold the torque wrench at age nine. "We heard."

"What did you hear?"

"That your father married you to an Engdahl."

"Did he tell you before or after?"

He looked at his boots.

"After," he said. "Yesterday. At the all-hands. He passed out a sheet cake."

I walked past him into the shed.

My mother's red toolbox stood where I'd left it under the workbench.

The big steel drawers still smelled like her cutting oil.

I got my arms around it and hauled it up onto my hip.

"You can't take that," my father said from the doorway.

Harlan Hagedorn had put on his quilted golf jacket and his best tan.

He was smiling.

"It's my mother's," I said.

"It's company property."

"It's got her initials on the lid."

"Honey, you don't need a toolbox now. You're an Engdahl. You'll never have to touch a wrench again."

I set the chest down on the floor.

I did it gently, because I wanted my hands free.

"You signed my name," I said.

He glanced over my shoulder.

Thirty-one people had crowded up to the shed door and were doing their best to look as if they weren't there.
