Chapter 15: She Didn't Hide Him
Odrienne waited until three guests were seated in the morning room before she mentioned Thalvian.
They had come to confirm the open gathering.
One was a cellist, a friend of Orivelle's.
The other two were the visitors from the first morning, and one of them was still asking about the floor.
"It will be warm," Orivelle promised her.
"Of course," Odrienne said, pouring tea over the interruption, "Mr Merovain's absence is at Miss Auvrane's own wish."
Ysmerelle set down her cup.
"I beg your pardon?" Ysmerelle asked.
"You find him tiresome, dear," Odrienne said. "You told me so on the stairs."
"I told you nothing on the stairs. I told you to mind the step."
The cellist looked into his saucer.
Caerovan, at the head of the table, had gone very still.
"I haven't asked anyone to be kept away," Ysmerelle said to the room.
"I'd be glad to see Mr Merovain. He has been invited, and I hope he comes."
Odrienne smiled at the guests.
"Young women in her position are generous with other people's doors."
