Chapter 9: Who Is This

Caleb picked up his notepad and walked out of the boardroom.

He heard Chantal's chair hit the carpet behind him.

"Caleb. Wait."

She caught him in the corridor outside the elevators, where twenty Skyward staff sat at open desks with their heads down.

Every head came up.

"Caleb, please."

He pressed the button for the elevator and did not turn.

"You work here," she said.

"You were in that room. Why were you in that room?"

"Excuse me?"

He turned at last and looked her in the face.

His voice was perfectly polite.

"Who is this?"

She stopped.

"What?"

"I'm sorry. Have we met?"

"Caleb, it's Chantal."

"Chantal." He frowned.

"Chantal." He shook his head slowly.

"No. I'm afraid I don't remember."

A young man at a desk behind her stopped typing.

"Don't," she said.

Her voice cracked.

"Don't do that to me."

"I'm sorry. I don't recall anyone by that name."

"You know I'm sorry."

"I'm sure you are." He looked at his notepad.

"You have a lot going on, I'm sure. I'd hate to take up your time."

"Caleb, stop."

"I've been so busy these days," he said.

"I lost track."

She put a hand over her mouth.

She understood.

Behind her, someone at a desk whispered, "Is that the owner's wife?"

Nobody answered, and nobody looked away.

"I didn't forget you," she whispered.

"I know exactly what you did."

"I couldn't call, I was ashamed. Please, you don't understand. I wanted to see you the second you were out."

"You wanted a meeting with a ghost."
