Chapter 14: Welcome Home
The ballroom at the club holds three hundred people, and on Saturday night every seat was full.
White hydrangeas. A string quartet. A big screen behind the stage with Carter's face on it.
WELCOME HOME, it said underneath.
Our table was right up front, because my father had paid seventy-five thousand dollars for it.
He sat on my left in his good navy suit, hands folded.
Polly sat on my right in a red dress she called "the funeral dress, for his career."
Her husband sat beside her, eating everyone's rolls.
Sam was across from me.
He wore a dark suit that fit him, for once, and no windbreaker.
"You look nice," I'd said in the lobby.
"You've said that twice," he'd said. "I'm starting to think you mean it."
Now he sat with his back to the wall where he could see the doors.
The two detectives were at the back by the coat check, in plain clothes, holding club sodas.
Carter's mother saw us when she came out to greet her guests.
She stopped in the middle of the carpet.
Then she smiled for the photographers and kissed my father on the cheek.
