Chapter 19: Chestnut Hill
I don't remember crossing the sidewalk.
I remember being on my knees beside him, and the band still playing because nobody had told them to stop.
"Dad. Dad, look at me."
His face was gray and wet. His eyes were open.
"Don't make a fuss," he said through his teeth. "There's press."
Sam was already on the phone with 911, kneeling on my father's other side, two fingers on his neck.
My father stayed awake the whole way to the hospital in Camden, gripping my hand and complaining about the ambulance suspension.
Three blocked arteries.
They did the bypass on Monday morning.
I sat in the waiting room for five hours with Sam on one side of me and Polly on the other.
Sam held my hand on his knee and didn't let go once, not even to turn a page.
When the surgeon came out and said it went well, I cried for the first time since the grill room.
Sam put his arm around me and let me ruin his shirt.
On Wednesday my father was sitting up in bed with tubes in both arms, giving orders.
"Board meets Friday," he said.
"Dad."
