Chapter 22: Victim Statement
"Yes, Your Honor," I said.
I'd written something down. I left the paper in my bag.
I walked to the front of the courtroom and stood at the little wooden rail, ten feet from Tripp.
He kept his eyes on the table.
"Mr. Gaines and I knew each other for two years," I said. "He used to call me the girl at the end of the table. He told me so on a bridge, at midnight, last August."
The judge was writing.
"Sam's grandmother is eighty-five now. She sleeps with a rolling pin under her pillow because of him."
"I'm not asking for a number," I said. "I want it on the record that he said it to a pregnant woman in the dark, sure nobody would ever hear."
I looked at Tripp.
"I heard it," I said. "I recorded the entire seven-minute conversation."
Tripp's sister was crying quietly in the second row.
I went back to my seat.
Sam took my hand without looking at me.
The judge sentenced Tripp Gaines to two to four years in state prison.
