Chapter 23: The Bridge Again

"Bring her?" I said. "To a bridge? At night?"

"She likes the car," Sam said. "And she's never seen the river."

"She's two months old. She hasn't seen her feet."

"Then she's got a lot to catch up on."

So on the first Saturday in May, at eleven at night, we parked on the east side of the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.

Sam had her in the carrier on his chest, facing in, wearing his grandmother's pink hat with the enormous pompom.

"Gram says she has to wear it," Sam said. "For the cold."

"It's sixty-eight degrees."

"Take it up with Gram."

We walked up onto the deck.

The last time I'd stood here, Tripp Gaines had looked at my stomach and told me pregnant women fall.

The time before that, Sam had kissed me against this railing until my glasses fogged.

And before that, a long time ago, a man had knelt here at sunset with a violinist he never paid for.

I'd thought I would hate this bridge forever.

I didn't.

It was just a bridge, with the river going by underneath, black and quiet.
