Chapter 13: Surprise

Cass stood in the shop doorway with her suitcase and her long coat, smiling.

"Surprise," she said again, to Priya this time.

Priya made a noise I had never heard from her, a small, delighted shriek, and threw her arms around her sister's waist.

Cass hugged her back, hard, with her chin on Priya's head, and over it she looked straight at me.

It was not a happy look.

Her eyes went from my face to my collar, and from my collar to the damp hair stuck to my forehead.

Cass has always been good at math.

"Cass!" Priya's mother came off the bench with her phone still in her hand. "You said you couldn't get the time off!"

"I lied. I'm a terrible daughter." Cass kissed her mother's cheek. "Can I steal Jo and Priya for an hour? Dress talk. Maid of honor business."

"You're not the maid of honor."

"I will be, in about ten minutes."

Her mother laughed and waved us off, and went back to her valet calls.

My gray Bronco was parked at a meter half a block down.

Cass took the passenger seat without asking, and Priya climbed into the back, and I drove, because someone had to.

"Okay," Cass said, as I pulled into traffic. "Which one of you wants to go first?"

"Cass," Priya said.

"Because I just watched my little sister walk out of a dressing room with her blouse on inside out, and my ex-girlfriend holding the door like a butler."

Priya looked down.

Her blouse was inside out, with the tag sticking up under her chin.

"Oh no," she said.

"Yes."

I kept my eyes on the road.

"I'm going to say something and I want everyone to stay calm," Cass said. "Jo. Did you sleep with my sister?"

"Yes."

"On my money?"

"Not on your money. I'll get to that."

"Priya. Did you sleep with Jo?"

"Many times," Priya said, in a very small, very clear voice. "I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. Both."

Cass put her face in her hands.

For a long block nobody said anything.
