Chapter 9: Client P

I opened the email at seven in the morning, in my bathroom, with the door shut.

Priya was in the kitchen making coffee in one of my T-shirts.

I could hear the spoon against the cup.

The message was from a law firm downtown, and it was three lines long.

"Client P confirms the event. Treadwell-Anand wedding, Cedar Hollow Ranch, Saturday the eighteenth. The client's instructions: it must not happen, and it must not be the client's doing."

Below that was a signature block, and below that, a name.

"Priya Anand."

I read it three times.

Fifteen thousand dollars had landed in my account twenty-two days ago, from the bride.

She had hired me before her sister did.

She had hired me before she ever met me.

I walked out of the bathroom with the phone in my hand.

She stood at the counter with her hair messy and her glasses crooked, humming.

She looked up and saw my face, and the humming stopped.

"What's wrong?"

I held the phone out.

She read the screen, and I watched the color leave her cheeks.

"You hired me," I said.

"Yes."

"You hired me to ruin your wedding."

"Yes."

"And Cass hired me to ruin it too, and neither of you knew."

"I didn't know that." Her voice was very small. "I swear to you, Jo. Not until the first night, when you told me she paid you."

"You knew the first night?"

"I knew who you were the second I saw the seam ripper." She put the cup down, and her hand shook. "That's why I locked the door."

I stared at her.

Every kiss, every night, every time she had said "ruin me" ran backward through my head like film.
