Chapter 13: The Question

Neither of us moved for a long moment, with the washers spread across the floor between our boots.

Then I did the thing I should have done five years ago.

I asked.

"Get your coat," I said.

"Why?"

"Because I'm going to ask you something, and I won't do it in a stockroom."

He looked at me, then at the rolling washers, then back at me.

"Item two says no vans," he said carefully.

"Item two says I decide. I decide on the van."

We left the mess for morning and walked out the back door into the cold.

The white van sat in the alley with its nose toward the lake.

He drove us out past the harbor and the dark church, to the dunes road and the empty beach lot at the state park.

He cut the engine.

The lake was a long black breath beyond the windshield, with one freighter lamp far out on it.

The heater ticked.

I turned in my seat to face him.

"If I take the partnership," I said, "would you come to Chicago?"

"Yes."

I blinked.

"I haven't finished the question."

"I know the rest of it. Yes."

"You don't know what I'd say about the apartment, or the work, or the,"

"Sue." He said it gently. "I'd sell the van, find a union hall, and learn to park on a street. Yes."

"You hate cities."

"I do."

"Your mother's house."

"It's a yellow house. It has a roof and a furnace. I can sell it, or rent it, or let it sit."
