Chapter 14: Last Day

On Friday morning I called Chicago from the store office, with the door shut and my father's reading glasses on the blotter.

I had written three sentences on a yellow pad and crossed out two.

"Susie," the managing partner said. "Tell me good news."

"It's not a yes," I said. "And it's not a no."

"That's a dentist's answer."

"It's a counteroffer."

I read him the sentence I'd kept.

I wanted to estimate for the firm from Michigan, three weeks out of four, and fly in for the bid weeks.

I wanted a contract, not a title, until I knew where I would live.

I wanted until the fifteenth of December to sign anything.

He was quiet long enough that I checked the screen.

"Nobody's done that," he said.

"Nobody's asked."

"You know what you're worth to us."

"I do. That's why I'm asking."

He sighed, and I heard a pen click.

"The fifteenth," he said. "And if the partnership's gone by then, don't call me crying."

"I never cry on the phone."

"You cried on the phone in 2021."

"That was a different building."

I hung up grinning and went out to the sales floor, where Bernie sat on her stool pretending not to have listened.
