Chapter 10: The Swing

The porch swing on Josiah's back porch hangs from two iron chains his grandfather bolted into the rafters in 1974.

It creaked when I sat on his lap, and it creaked louder when I got off.

"Stay there," I said.

"Ms. Dunavant."

"I mean it. Don't move."

It was the Friday before Thanksgiving week, and thirty-eight degrees, and I was wearing his wool coat and nothing else.

The yard behind the porch was dark, with one streetlamp at the far fence.

I knelt on the boards on a folded quilt, between his knees, and looked up.

He sat on the swing with his hands on the chains and his shirt unbuttoned.

His breath made small clouds.

"You're going to freeze," he said.

"Then you'd better be quick to warm me."

He laughed, low, and the swing creaked.

I opened his belt and undid the button and drew down the zipper.

He lifted his hips so I could pull his trousers and shorts to his knees.

His cock rose up out of them, thick and flushed and already glistening.

The cold air hit it, and it jumped.

I looked at it for a long moment.

"Tell me something I don't know," I said.

"About what?"

"About you. Something nobody's heard."

He was quiet.

I wrapped my fingers around the base and stroked him once, slowly, and his thighs went tight.

"My father left my mother when I was twelve," Josiah said. "He left her for the choir director's wife."

I stopped moving my hand.

"Don't stop," he said.

I started again, slowly.

"The choir director came to the church door on a Sunday morning," Josiah said. "He didn't say anything."

He stopped, and I waited.

"He stood in the doorway, and the whole church looked at his face."

"You were there," I said.

"Front row. I was twelve."

He looked out at the dark yard.

"I decided that day I would never put that look on another man's face," he said. "I will never be the man in anybody's marriage."
