My stepmother arrived on Tuesday at eight o'clock exactly, and she did not knock twice.
She stood in my doorway in a cream wool suit with a pearl pin at the lapel and a leather folder held against her chest.
She is fifty-six, and she wears her hair in a smooth helmet that has not moved in the ten years I have known her.
Her eyes went around my loft and stopped on my bed.
His gray tie was still hanging from the headboard.
"Marlee," she said. "Mr. Hardaway."
Josiah stood by the bookshelf in his shirtsleeves with his hands open at his sides.
He had stayed the night on my floor, on a quilt, because I had told him he could have the floor.
He said nothing.
"May I sit?" my stepmother said.
"There's a stool," I said.
She did not sit.
"I'll be brief," she said. "I have had the clerk's record since Thursday. Colt's lawyers have a statement for you to sign, and I have an offer to go with it."
"I'm listening."
"Sixty thousand dollars, wired Monday. The Martin appraised and insured at my expense. And a room in the house, always, with your name on the door."
