Chapter 9: Four in the Morning
Leeann stood in the middle of Josiah's living room on Friday night with a bag of takeout and her mouth hanging open.
"Marlee," she said. "He has a church directory."
"I know," I said.
"On the coffee table. With a ribbon in it."
"I know," I said.
Leeann is five-foot-eight, with red hair in a knot, a silver stud in her nose and eleven years of bartending behind her.
She has seen men do every stupid thing a man can do at two in the morning.
She walked the length of the room, touching nothing, and stopped in front of the framed photograph of Josiah's grandfather in a pressed Army uniform.
"This is the most terrifyingly respectable man I have ever seen you with," she said.
"Thank you," I said.
"I told you to take a date to the party. A date, Mar. You took a licensed firearm."
"He's a very good date," I said.
"I watched the video forty times," Leeann said. "I paused it on his hand lifting Colt's fingers off your arm. I cried in the walk-in cooler at work."
I put my arms around her, and she held on to me, hard.
"Colt called me four times," she said into my shoulder. "Asking where you are. I told him you were at a convent."
"Did he believe you?"
"No. But I said it with a lot of confidence."
Josiah came out of the bedroom in a black suit and a black tie, with his earpiece in his pocket.
"Ms. Boyette," he said. "A pleasure."
Leeann looked up at him for a long time.
"Okay," she said to me, quietly. "Okay. I get it."
He had a night job, guarding a visiting singer from a hotel in Midtown to a bus, and he would not be back until four.
