Chapter 11: Silverroot

I was over the table before anyone else moved.

Glass crunched under my knees.

Grandpa lay on his side on the floor between the chairs, his cane rolled away under the tablecloth.

His eyes were half open.

His breath came in short, wet little pulls.

"Call an ambulance!" someone shouted.

"Get a doctor!"

"There's no time," I said.

I turned him onto his back and pressed two fingers to the inside of his wrist.

His pulse was slow.

Much too slow.

It skipped, caught, skipped again.

I bent over his mouth and breathed in.

Sweet at the front.

Bitter behind.

So strong now it made my eyes water.

"Wolfsbane," I said. "A lot of it. Tonight."

A sound went through the crowd.

Kendrick was on his knees on the other side of Grandpa.

"No," he said. "No, the tonic's in my pocket. I took it. He hasn't had it since yesterday."

"Then someone gave it to him another way."

I looked up at the head table.
