Everyone stopped.
Three hundred people, half in their coats, turned back toward the front.
Kendrick walked out into the open space in front of the head table.
He stood there in yesterday's shirt with his hands hanging at his sides.
He looked at me.
Then he looked at the floor.
"Three days ago," he said, "I stood in an airport and told my sister she'd kneel in this hall."
His voice was rough.
"I told her she'd get down on her knees and beg forgiveness in front of all of you. For something she didn't do."
He swallowed.
"Something I knew she didn't do."
Nobody moved.
Then my brother got down on his knees.
Right there on the boards, where he'd told me to kneel.
Both knees.
His head bowed.
A sound went around the hall, low and shocked.
An heir did not kneel to anyone but an Alpha.
Not in two hundred years.
"Juno," he said.
