"Then I'll walk past you," I said.
I pulled the car door shut.
Torin stood in the drive and watched us go.
In the side mirror, he got smaller and smaller until the pines swallowed him.
Soren didn't say anything for the first twenty miles.
He just held my hand on the seat between us, his thumb moving slowly over my knuckles.
"You're allowed to talk to him," he said at last.
"I know."
"I'm not worried."
"I know that too."
He smiled out the window.
"Good."
Then his thumb stopped on my knuckles.
"You still owe me a door," he said.
The driver's eyes flicked to the mirror and away.
"The old warrior owes you a door," I said. "Him and his timing."
"He is forgiven. You aren't." He lifted my hand and put his mouth to the inside of my wrist, slow, where my pulse jumped for him. "Nordfjell has a great many doors. I intend to close every one of them."
My face went hot.
I kept my eyes on the road.
He laughed under his breath and didn't let go of my wrist for ten miles.
