Chapter 13: The Bridge

I walked out onto the bridge, and the iron rang under my boots.

Rhys didn't come toward me. He stayed in the middle of the bridge with his hands open at his sides.

"Start with the ring," I said, and held it up.

His eyes went to my fist and shut for a moment.

"That's Rooke's," he said. "He turned it on his finger the whole time he talked to me."

"Talked about what?"

"About you. And about a list Odette Slocumb keeps."

The river ran loud below us.

"What list, Rhys?"

"Father gambled," he said. "You knew that much. You didn't know he lost to the old Alpha of Cairnfell, over four winters, and never paid."

"I was fourteen."

"You were a child. A month after Father died, Rooke asked for a truce meeting on this bridge, and I thought he wanted to bargain over the grazing land."

My skin had gone cold.

"He had a paper with Father's mark on it," Rhys said. "It said the debt passed to the next of blood. Not to me. I was the Alpha, and he said the pack was worth more than I'd ever be able to pay."

"To who, then?"

"To you."

He said it flat, and I heard what it cost him.

"He had a buyer waiting through Odette. A man from the coast who liked them young and pureblood. Saturday, Rooke said. I could say goodbye to you or not."

I put my hand on the iron rail. It was rough and wet.
