Chapter 4: The Square

At noon the lanterns from the night before were still hanging over the square.

Nobody had taken them down. Nobody wanted to be the one to touch them.

The whole pack stood in a ring on the cobbles, four hundred wolves, and in the middle of it Dean knelt with his hands tied behind him.

He had been in the cage under the pack house all night. One eye was swollen shut.

I stood at my brother's right side, which was where I had never once stood in public.

My wrists were wrapped in clean gauze. My wolf was still too weak to answer me, but I could stand.

Rhys waited until the square was silent.

"Most of you saw this man carry Willa Kingsmill out of here last night," he said. "He told you she was tired."

Nobody moved.

"Willa is my sister. My father's daughter. I kept it quiet for twelve years, and that was my mistake, not hers."

A murmur went around the ring.

I kept my eyes on Dean.

"Dean Karrick put silver dust in her cup," Rhys said. "He chained her in a cellar on my land and he sold her."

"Alpha, please," Dean said. His voice cracked on it. "I was in debt. They would have killed me."

"So you gave them her."

"It wasn't, I didn't."

"Ask him who," I said.

Rhys looked at me, and he nodded once.

I walked three steps forward, until the toes of my boots touched the edge of the circle Dean was kneeling in.

"Dean. Who told you to do it?"

"Nobody told me."

"You said it in the cellar. You said you told Odette's people three weeks ago."

The ring went very quiet.

A few heads turned toward the pack fund stall, which was still standing at the corner of the square, with its little cloth and its stack of cider cups.
