Chapter 11: The Boathouse
Fay's POV
Niko came to the boathouse at dusk, and he did not come alone.
He came on foot down the gravel road with his hands in his pockets, thin as a rake in the good navy coat.
A hundred yards behind him, a county car sat with its lights off.
I stood in the boathouse door in my coat, with my arms wrapped around myself, and watched him come.
Kostas had told me an hour ago, on the dock behind the house, that he had called his son and wanted me there.
"Because he will not say it to me," he had said, when I asked why. "I think he may say it to you."
The boathouse stood at the edge of the water, a long low shed with a sagging roof.
It smelled of tar and old rope and river.
Inside were two upturned skiffs, a stack of sail bags and a workbench with a single bulb.
Kostas hung back in the shadows with his arms folded and the monitor hidden under his trouser leg.
Niko saw me and stopped.
He was twenty feet away, in the last of the light.
His face was gaunt, and there were violet shadows under his eyes.
"Fay," he said.
"Niko," I said.
"He told you to be here."
"He asked."
"He asks, and everyone does it," Niko said.
It was bitter, and so young.
He came the rest of the way and stopped at the threshold.
He did not come in.
"I never asked him to do it," he said.
"Do what?" I said.
"Sit in there. I never asked him to."
His voice cracked.
"I wanted him to say, come forward, Niko, it is time. He never said it. He just sat in there and waited. Every week I went to the visits, and every week he asked if I was eating."
