Chapter 11: The Deal

I put the marker in the tray under the whiteboard, next to my little Ohio.

"Then I'll make sure to thank the inventor," I said.

The dean put his glasses back on.

"You're welcome," he said, and walked out.

He'd said it without blinking.

Dakota was waiting on the bench outside with two coffees.

"Well?"

"He held the decision. I'm barred from presenting."

"That's illegal."

"It's not illegal. It's just disgusting."

She handed me a coffee. "Did you draw the thing?"

"I drew the thing. With the coffee stain."

"Did Winston cry?"

"His ears went pink."

"That's crying for him," she said. "I'll take it."

I went back to the warehouse and built stage six until my hands stopped shaking.

Pierson came at seven and asked how it went.

I told him all of it. The whiteboard. The flat spot. My advisor looking at the table. The dean's last line.

He listened without interrupting. When I got to "my table," he put down the brass rod he was holding, very carefully.

"Okay," he said.

That was all he said. Then he picked the rod back up and asked where I wanted the hole.

At 10:15 the next morning, my phone rang. A university number.

"Miss Keating? Please hold for the provost."

I stood up so fast I knocked over a coffee can of screws. The kid was going to kill me.

The provost had a warm, smooth voice.

"Rhiannon. I'm so glad I caught you. I'm calling with good news."

"Okay."

"The matter with Mr. Wardell's complaint has been resolved."

My heart jumped. I held onto the table.

"Resolved how?"

"The complaint is withdrawn. Your scholarship is fully restored. Your access to the build shop is restored. And in recognition of your contributions, the Showcase program will carry a footnote crediting your fabrication work on the Nautilus."
