Chapter 18: Cuffs
Kelsey opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
She looked at her phone.
Then she looked at me.
For one second, she was eighteen at orientation again, asking if the seat next to me was taken.
"I did," she said. "But he told me to."
The room breathed out all at once.
Spencer smiled at the investors.
"There you have it," he said. "A forger, by her own admission. I'm as shocked as any of you."
"You sent her letter to forty-one teachers," I said into the microphone.
"I sent what I was given."
"And the auditors? The wedding? Same paper, same date?"
"Sweetheart," he said softly. "You signed it. Nobody held your hand."
"You did," I said. "You held the page."
At the back of the ballroom, the double doors opened.
Six people came in wearing dark jackets with yellow letters on the back.
The string quartet stopped mid-note.
Somebody at table eleven dropped a champagne glass.
The agents came down the center aisle between the round tables.
The one in front was a tall woman with short gray hair and a folder in her hand.
She stopped at the foot of the stage and looked up at Spencer.
"Spencer Treadwell?"
"Yes?" He was still smiling. "Is there a problem, officer?"
"You're under arrest for wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy." She held up a paper. "We also have a warrant to freeze every account Treadwell Ridge opened in the last thirty days. Including the ones in the Caymans."
His smile stayed exactly where it was.
His eyes went to the back of the room.
To Brett, standing by the doors.
Brett didn't look away.
"You," Spencer said, very quietly.
Two agents came up the steps.
Spencer took one step back toward the curtain.
Then he seemed to remember three hundred phones were pointed at him.
