Chapter 9: The Loop
"Sadie?" Caelen said. "Who signs like that?"
"Kelsey."
The teacher put her glass down.
"The girl who laughed in the video?"
"The girl who laughed in the video."
I took out my phone and opened Kelsey's account.
Not the new posts. The old ones.
I scrolled down through ten years of her life.
Brunches. Beaches. Brett's jacket. Brett's front seat.
My own face, cropped half out of a hundred pictures.
Caelen leaned in.
"What are you looking for?"
"She used to sign my name on things in college," I said. "As a joke. Party sign-ups. A gym waiver. Once she signed me up for a hot dog eating contest."
"Did you eat the hot dogs?"
"I came second."
He made a sound that was almost a laugh.
I kept scrolling.
Sophomore year. October.
There it was.
A photo of a crumpled campus form. A permission slip for a dorm trip to Big Bear.
Signed, in purple gel pen: Sadie Lowell.
Huge round S. Loop at the top curling back over itself.
The caption said: forged my bestie's signature lol she's never gonna notice.
Thirty-eight likes.
One of them was Brett's.
I put my phone down on the binder next to the September letter.
The two S's sat side by side.
Ten years apart.
Identical.
The teacher looked at them through her reading glasses for a long time.
"I graded handwriting for thirty-six years," she said. "That's the same child."
Caelen took pictures of everything.
The binder. The letter. The phone. The teacher's hands holding them, so nobody could say they'd been switched.
She let him.
At the door, she held my face in both hands.
"Thirty-one million dollars," she said. "Some of those women have nothing else. Is it gone?"
