Chapter 9: The Boathouse
My mother stepped inside and closed the boathouse door behind her.
She slid the bolt.
She stood with her back against it and looked at me.
Not through me. At me.
Her eyes went over my face.
"Rory," she said.
Just that.
My name, in her voice, in her accent, for the first time in eleven months and seven days.
I had imagined this.
In every version, I said something cutting.
In real life I couldn't say anything at all.
"You're thin," she said. "They don't feed you up there."
"You don't get to say that."
"No." She pressed her hand over her mouth. "No. I don't."
"How did you know I was here?"
"The camera man has a camera on the north path. Only on the north path. He watches it every night."
"He has for a year." Her voice cracked. "He called me the second you came out of the trees."
"You knew I lived here."
"We all knew."
"Then why."
It came out louder than I meant.
