Chapter 11: Board Meeting

The board of Benedetti Foods met on the fortieth floor, around a table that seated twelve.

Seven chairs were filled.

Dad sat at the head with Lorenzo on his right and Rocco on his left.

I walked in at nine on the dot with my grandmother's shares in a folder, and every head turned.

"Livia." Dad half rose. "This is a closed meeting."

"I hold fifteen percent of this company," I said. "Nonna left it to me. I'm allowed in the room."

The oldest director cleared his throat.

"She is," he said. "The shares carry a seat."

I walked to the empty chair halfway down the table and did not sit.

"Good morning," I said. "I'd like to read something."

"Livia, we've discussed this at home," Dad said, in his gentle voice. "Now isn't the time."

"I think it's exactly the time."

I took the memo out of my folder and laid a copy in front of every director.

Seven sheets, seven faces.

"This is my father's own handwriting," I said. "It's dated six years ago. It says the trust my grandmother left me would be moved into his hands, and that a thirty-four million dollar shortfall in Genoa would be covered out of it."

Nobody spoke.

"It says my marriage must not happen until the shortfall is repaid."

The oldest director put on his glasses.

"Chairman," he said slowly. "Is this authentic?"

My father didn't answer.

His hand had flattened on the table.

"The second page is his plan," I said. "He placed a man in my life to keep a ring on my finger, and paid my adopted sister to be that man's wife. When the vetoes ran out, he buried an empty box to buy one more year."
