Chapter 17: Call the Notes
Rayne Capital kept its loan committee on the sixtieth floor, in a room with a view of the whole harbor.
Dad walked in at ten with his lawyer and sat at the far end of the table.
He had shaved carefully.
He looked at me, then at Lorenzo beside me, and he did not look at the empty chair where Rocco should have been.
"This is a business meeting," he said. "Family should wait outside."
"I'm a fifteen percent shareholder," I said. "Lorenzo is your head of operations."
"Was."
"Is," Bruce said, from the head of the table. "I'm the one with the notes. Sit, Mr. Benedetti."
Dad sat.
His lawyer opened a folder and slid one photograph down the table.
It showed Bruce on my grandmother's stoop at one in the morning, with me in the doorway in my coat.
"Mr. Rayne is a creditor of my client's company," the lawyer said. "He is also, evidently, intimate with a shareholder who has lately shown signs of distress."
"Signs of distress," I said.
"The public confrontation at the funeral. The gala. The boardroom." He looked at the photograph. "A court would call it undue influence."
Bruce didn't move.
"Is that all?" he said.
"We are prepared to hold your notes in escrow and pay them out in full at the sale closing. You will not lose a cent. Withdraw your interference and walk away with your money."
Bruce looked at my father.
"You think this is about money," he said.
"What else would it be?"
Bruce didn't answer him.
He looked at me.
I put Lorenzo's six keys on the table, and laid the first invoice from the Newark ledger room beside them.
"This is Genoa," I said. "A press that never ran. Paid in cash to two contractors who don't exist."
Dad's eyes dropped to the page.
