Chapter 13: The Album With Cut Edges

The elder ate three of Fenna's biscuits before she would talk about the price.

We sat around the lodge kitchen table at dawn, and she held the dull grey chip in her fist.

"It can be undone," she said. "But only by the one who spoke the wish, at the shrine, at moonrise."

"Tonight?" I asked.

"The moon is full Friday. The stone will answer once more, and only once. After that it is dust."

Torin's chair creaked.

"What does it cost her?" he said.

"Nothing she hasn't paid." The elder looked at me. "Your family gets back every day of the three months in one rush. Your mother will remember asking you if you had met."

I put my hands under the table so nobody would see them shake.

"And Odette?"

"Odette will have an Alpha's household looking at her with the truth in their eyes." The elder reached for another biscuit. "That part I won't mourn."

She left with her wardens at nine, and she took no tea.

I had barely stood up to clear the plates when the porch guard rapped on the door again.

"Imogen," he said. "There's a woman at the gate asking for you by name."

I knew who it was before I got to the porch.

My mother stood outside the iron gate in her navy coat, alone, with a leather album held against her chest.

She had driven herself, and her car was parked crooked on the verge with the door still open.
