Chapter 4: Odette Brings a Coat

Odette stood at the gate in her silver gown with her arms wrapped around herself.

Snow had collected in her braid, and her lips were blue.

Behind me the whole Brask pack had come out onto the lodge porch, quiet and watching.

Torin stayed one step behind my shoulder.

"Imi," my sister called. "Imi, thank God."

She was holding a duffel bag in one hand and my phone charger in the other.

"How did you find me?" I asked.

"You weren't at any motel in town." She laughed, shaky. "I called the pack lines. A Brask scout said an Alpha had picked you up on the county road."

"You called them tonight?"

"I called everyone."

It sounded reasonable.

She walked up to the gate, and one of the porch men lifted the latch for her.

Odette came through it and set down the bag at my feet.

"I brought your things," she said. "Your toothbrush, your good boots, the blue sweater you like. Mom's asleep, and I packed it all myself."

"Mom is asleep."

"Mom thinks she's doing the right thing."

I looked at my sister's face.

I had known it for twenty-one years, and I could not read it.

"Odette," I said. "She asked if we'd met."

"She's stubborn."

"Dad asked someone to help me out."

"He's hurt." Odette took both of my hands. Her fingers were ice. "I want to help you fix this, Imi. They'll take you back if you say sorry for the fight. You say sorry, you withdraw the thing you said in the ballroom, and you promise you won't go back to the shrine."

"The shrine?"

"You know what I mean."
