Chapter 9: She Says Yes

"Twelve Sundays," I said.

"Yes."

"I stood in the snow outside my own house, and you sat in a truck."

"Yes."

"Every week I called into the link, and every week you heard it go nowhere, and you didn't come get me."

"I came as far as I was allowed. Then I was sent away." His voice cracked. "I was a coward, Imogen. I let a man tell me to go, and I went. Say anything you want to say. I'll take it."

I hit him.

It wasn't hard, a flat palm to the chest, and he didn't move.

I hit him again.

"You knew," I said. "You knew I was out there."

"I knew."

"I was alone for three months."

"I know."

"I hate you."

"All right."

"I hate you, and I don't want you to stop looking at me."

His eyes lifted to mine.

My hand was still pressed flat against his chest.

His heart was pounding under it, and it was running as fast as mine.

"Imogen."

"Say the term again."

He swallowed.

"You say yes, once, out loud, and it's yes the whole way."

"Yes."

For a moment he did not move.

Then he had my face in his hands, and he kissed me.

It wasn't gentle.

I had braced for gentle, and I got three months of waiting, hot and hard against my mouth.

I opened for him at once.

His tongue was in my mouth, and I fisted both hands in his shirt and pulled.

He lifted me off the snow.

I locked my legs around his waist, and he carried me up the steps and through the lodge and up the stairs with his mouth never leaving mine.

His door banged back against the wall.

He set me on the edge of the bed and pulled his own coat off me, and the borrowed flannel, and the cold air hit my bare skin.

"Look at you," he said, low.

His hands shook.

I reached for his belt.
