Chapter 12: The Cellar
I smiled back at her.
Her smile faltered, just at the edges.
Then the elder called the hearing closed, and the hall broke into noise.
Anson caught me by the side door on the way out.
He didn't touch me.
He held out a ring with two keys on it.
"The old one's the cellar," he said. "The new one's the back door. Dad never changed the locks."
"Why are you giving me these?"
"Because she'll have somebody tear those walls out before any Council gets there." He looked at the floor. "And because I should have come down the stairs."
He walked away before I could answer.
For the next week I stood in the ridge clearing every night.
Rue got louder.
Some nights my eyes went silver and stayed that way for an hour.
Once, my fingernails darkened and curved, and I cried out, and Bastian caught my hands and held them until they went back.
But nothing more came.
Seven days before the Ascension, Bastian drove me to Hollowcreek himself.
