Chapter 13: Father
"I saw the truck leave the gate," my father said. "I followed you down."
He didn't come down the stairs.
He stood at the top, one hand on the door frame, as if the cold stopped him there.
Bastian stepped half in front of me.
"It's all right," I said.
He didn't move back, but he let me see past him.
My father was looking at the silver behind the open plank.
"Did you know?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Tilda says she showed you her fingers," I said. "Eight years ago. The same day."
"She did."
"So you knew."
"I knew there was silver in the walls." His voice was rough. "I told myself it was to keep you safe. Portia said you'd tear yourself apart."
"Did you believe her?"
He was quiet for a long time.
"No," he said.
I held the plank tighter.
"Then why?"
He came down two steps.
Then he stopped, and I saw him feel the cold of the silver and not like it.
"If you'd shifted in front of the pack," he said, "the oldest wolves in that hall would have smelled Senna on you. Portia couldn't risk that."
