"There's silver in that cup," I said.
The housekeeper set her mug down so hard the tea jumped.
"I'll get the King. And a crowbar."
"No."
She stared at me.
"If we break it open tonight," I said, "it's our word against hers again. She'll say we planted it. She'll say I'm afraid."
"Honey, she's trying to poison you."
"I know." I looked at the pantry door. "So let her do it in front of everyone."
Bastian didn't like it.
He stood in the kitchen in a T-shirt with his arms folded and told me so, twice.
"You don't have to prove anything to them," he said.
"I've spent my whole life with her saying one thing in the kitchen and another in the front room," I said. "Just once, I want her to do it in the front room."
He looked at me for a long time.
"I'll be three feet away," he said. "The whole time."
"I know."
The next night the great hall was so full that people stood along the walls three deep.
