Chapter 16: Chosen
I looked down at her.
Her mascara had run. Her hair was coming out of its pins.
She looked younger than twenty.
"You're my sister," I said.
She nodded fast, her face lifting.
"You are," I said. "You were my sister when you wore the white dress, and I wore your old green one. You were my sister every full moon for eight years while I was in the cellar."
Her face stopped lifting.
"You knew she promised I'd never shift," I said. "You were a little girl when you heard it. And you've been a grown woman for two years, and you never once asked her how."
"I didn't know about the silver. I swear."
"I believe you," I said. "You didn't want to know."
She let go of the coat.
"Give me back my scarf," I said.
She stared at me.
Then she reached up with shaking hands and unwound the blue wool from around her shoulders, and held it out.
I took it.
It smelled like her perfume.
It would wash out.
"Go with your mother, Lottie," I said. "She needs somebody to be her daughter."
Lottie got up off the stone.
She walked out through the side door in her white dress, the way our mother had gone.
Nobody went after her.
A murmur broke across the hall.
Then the Beta, from somewhere by the back wall, started to clap.
It spread.
It went from wall to wall until the whole hall was clapping and stamping.
Some of the young wolves were howling up at the roof.
Bastian leaned down to my ear.
"You all right?"
"I'm cold," I said. "And I'm starving."
He laughed out loud, in front of every Alpha in the north.
Portia's father pulled his three packs out of the Hollowcreek alliance within the week.
Portia went home to him. Lottie went with her.
I heard they had a big house near Spokane with a view of the river.
I never went to see it.
My father stood in front of his own pack in Moonstone Clearing and told them all of it.
The mill house. Senna. The towel. The cellar.
Anson told me about it on the phone afterward.
"Nobody said anything for a long time," he said. "Then an old Alpha asked if the silver was still in the walls."
"Is it?"
"Not anymore," Anson said. "I spent three days taking it down. I wore the welding gloves."
At midwinter my father gave the Alpha seat to Anson and moved into the mill house by the creek.
He fixed the roof himself.
He calls me on Sundays.
Sometimes I pick up.
In the spring, Bastian drove me down to Hollowcreek to see the stone under the apple tree.
Someone had carved it properly.
Senna Farrow.
Under it, in smaller letters: Mother of the Chosen.
"Anson," Tilda said, when I asked. "Took him two weeks. He cut his thumb twice."
