Chapter 16: The Mark

He did not speak until the tower door was shut behind us.

Then he put his back to it and looked at me across the firelit room.

"Hazel has a bed made up in the east wing," he said. "For a queen. It has been made every week for forty years."

"I know. Hazel told me, in the kitchen."

"You don't have to sleep in mine."

"Conrad."

"I want you to know you can choose."

I crossed the floor and stopped in front of him.

I took the locket off my neck and set it on the table beside the door, where I would see it in the morning.

"Rule three," I said. "One true question each night."

"Ask it."

"Is it the bond? Is this the bond, or is it you?"

He took a breath that shook at the end.

"I wanted you in the kitchen," he said. "Before I knew the word. You told me not to stare, and I couldn't stop. That was me, Saskia. The bond only gave me a name for it."

"Good," I said. "Because I'm choosing this one."

I put both hands in his shirt and pulled his mouth down to mine.

He kissed me hard and open-mouthed, with nothing careful in it.

I made a sound into his mouth, and he groaned.

"The gown," he said against my jaw. "Hazel will kill me."

"Then tear it carefully."

He laughed, low, and turned me around.

He found the hooks down my spine and undid them one at a time, with his mouth following each one.

By the fourth I was shaking.

By the eighth I had both hands braced on the door.

The green silk slid down and pooled on the floor.

His hands came around my ribs and up over my breasts, rough and warm, and he pressed his chest to my back.

"I'm going to take my time," he said into my ear. "Every minute of it is mine."

"Don't you dare stop."

His laugh was a breath on my neck.

He walked me forward, with my hands against the wall and the fire hot on my legs, and he knelt behind me.
