Chapter 9: Visible

I woke in a real hospital bed with a drip in my arm and a window onto a parking structure.

The kidney doctor stood at the foot of the bed with a folder.

She was small and brisk, with her sleeves pushed up, and she did not say good morning.

"Your kidney function is at fourteen percent," she said.

"You're in stage four, close to five. You should have been on dialysis a month ago."

"I've been in a basement for seven years."

"That would do it." She turned a page.

"I've had your imaging done. You arrived with no records, and I like to know what I'm treating."

"And?"

"You have six healed fractures. Four ribs, the left wrist and your jaw, on the right. The jaw was set badly and has been compensated for."

"I know about the jaw."

"No one here knew about any of it until this morning." She looked up.

"I'm going to put every one of them in your chart in plain language."

"If anyone asks whether your scars are self-inflicted, I'll tell them you can't break your own jaw."

I could not speak for a moment.

Seven years of bruises, and she had turned a page, and they were visible at last.

"Doctor," I said. "May I have it in writing?"

"You may have a copy of every page."

She started the dialysis that afternoon.

A machine did the work of my kidneys for four hours.

I lay still and watched my blood travel through a clear tube and back.

An officer sat outside the door because of the hold.

He was a bored young man with a crossword, and he never looked in.
