Gemma came down the last rung and stood with her back against the ladder.
"Sit," she said. "Please."
"I'll stand."
"Then I'll tell it standing." She pushed her hair behind her ears. Her hands were not steady, and she saw me look. "A year ago my father put me on the Tessaro books for the merger. He wanted a Ferrante to see what we were buying."
"And you found Camilla."
"In the second week. A transfer on the first of every month, no invoice. I went back through the files and counted. Then I looked up who Camilla Hayes was, and I found the engagement photo from your cousin's party."
"You knew that night in the car," I said. "You said nothing about it."
"Yes. I knew all of it that Sunday, with my hand around a water glass. I had carried my envelope into Nonna's study that morning."
I held onto the back of the chair.
"Why Renzo's name?"
"Because it had to be a theft." She said it plainly. "If I'd shown you the ledger, you would have gone to your father. He'd have called it a misunderstanding by dessert, and you would have sat back down. You needed to stand up in front of all of them, with nobody able to talk you out of it afterward."
"So you asked Renzo for March 14."
"In November, at a dinner. I told him it was lucky. He thought being generous with me was his own idea."
"And you filed at nine. And asked Nonna the time twice."
"So she'd remember that you came second."
