Chapter 15: The Ferrante Table

Gemma's POV

My father keeps one dining table for guests and one for business, and Gianni Tessaro was sitting at the business one.

He had a coffee in front of him and a pen beside it.

He stood when I came in.

"Gemma," he said. "You look tired. Weddings."

"Mr. Tessaro."

My father did not stand. He had the merger papers squared in front of him, forty pages with sticky tabs.

I sat across from both of them and kept my coat on.

"I'll be quick," Gianni said. "My son Renzo is a fool, and I'll say it first so nobody has to."

"That's generous."

"The merger is not about Renzo. It is about a Tessaro wife in the book on the fourteenth and a Ferrante name beside it." He opened his hands. "I'll forgive the little scene with Nico. Young people. You walk down the aisle to Renzo as planned, and I'll see Nico is comfortable."

"Comfortable," I said.

"A house. A share in the Villa. Everything he wanted before you got ideas."

He smiled at me, and it was a very good smile.

I had read a year of his accounts, and I knew what that smile cost.

"And if I don't?"

"Then Tessaro Provisions moves its cold storage out of the Ferrante warehouse in sixty days."

He sipped his coffee.
